I was asked a question about Photopills and the Depth of Field calculator in it. I don’t use this app for that, preferring instead the app Simple D of F that I demo in this course. However, if you have Photopills, which is an awesome app, here is what I use for DofF.
I use Classic D of F cuz it is easy to understand. I have my Canon 6D set with a 24 mm lens and f/16 set. My subject is 30′ away. The hyperfocal distance is 4.2 approx and that is where I set focus. The near limit, the closest point deemed in focus, is 2.3′ approx. The next two are:
Hyperfocal near limit: The distance between the camera and the first element that is considered to be acceptably sharp when focusing at the hyperfocal distance.
DOF near limit: The distance between the camera and the first element that is considered to be acceptably sharp.
Depth of Field (DOF) In Front: Distance between the DoF Near Limit and the focus plane.
I am not that sure what the difference is between the firth two, but they are close. Then as you can see, Infinity is the DofF far limit and same with Depth of Field. Then the DOF in Front is the distance from shutter to near limit.
Kinda confusing to some degree but if you wonder about this app, I hope this helps.
