Welcome, BPSOP Students!

My name is Beth Ruggiero-York, and I will be your instructor for Fun in the Dark: Getting Started in Night Photography. We start tomorrow, so get ready!

I will be introducing you to the different types of night photography, techniques used in a dark environment, and what you need to know to make the best images in different low light conditions. You will learn the principles and techniques through the course of four lessons, each one building on the previous one to ensure that, by the end of the course, you are comfortable planning and executing your own night shoots.

The equipment you need for this class is: a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a fast, wide lens (e.g., 24mm f/2.8, etc.), and a sturdy tripod. If you have any questions about your current equipment or equipment you are considering purchasing, feel free to email me.

The lessons for the class are available for download and viewing every Friday morning. You will then have 10 days to upload your images for that lesson’s assignment. If the moon phase is not cooperating with an assignment, just submit it when you can.

So that you know when to expect the feedback on your images, I will do the critiques within 7 days after the due date.

IMPORTANT: When uploading your assignments, please include detailed notes on the post-processing steps you used.

A little background about me… Night photography is my photographic passion, and I look forward to sharing that with you over the next weeks. I teach photography workshops for Arizona Highways Photo Workshops, as well as my own workshops in the US, Europe, and Asia. The updated 2nd edition of my book on night photography, “Fun in the Dark: A Guide to Successful Night Photography” will answer your questions about night shooting.

I encourage you to post an introduction about you and your photography in the class Q&A section. Let me know what experience with night photography you have. It is my goal to teach you new skills to optimize your night images, so let’s get busy!

    Beth Ruggiero-York
