Way too often, portraits are shot from right in front of your subject. And for good reason….. as it usually gets the best perspective of your subject. But not often enough do we think of capturing them from another perspective. You can shoot them from above, looking down…or from the side…. or even capture them from ground level looking straight into their faces…. as there are really so many different angles to photograph people. It just takes a little thinking outside of the box and trying to come up with something different. I give assignments like this in my Eye to Eye – Capturing the Face class here at BPSOP as some of the your best portraits of people might be not from directly in front of them, but from a different angle.
The following images show some different examples where I did not shoot subjects from directly in front of them. Try something different next time you are photographing someone. Try to push yourself to think of different ways to capture them as you are really looking for “stopping power” in your images. Something that makes people stop to really look at your images and thinking outside of the box will really help push your photography more than anything else! ** Looking at the last 2 images below, you can see how I captured the image of the tribe. I shoot from low angles all the time especially with my travel photography of great faces.
