The Zen of Photography

Ready to slow down and smell the roses? Need to get back to basics and remember why you love photography? Here are three simple questions to use when approaching your photography.

1. How do you want your life to look?

Zen, peaceful, quiet, and free of drama? Exuberant and exciting with lots of laughter? Full of adventure and activity?

Me, I want my life to feel zen. Peaceful. (And free of drama and stress!) I photograph the quiet moments of my life to show stillness and serenity. Because when I look at my photo-stream, I want to see that my life is not just comprised of dramatic ups and downs, the way I sometimes think it is. I want to see the beauty in my life and focus on that. Because you get more of what you focus on…

2. What do you want more of?

Do you wish you had more time to yourself? Or do you dream of spending more time with like-minded people? Perhaps you wish you spent more time on your hobbies?

What I want more of is work / life balance. I want to stay connected to people, but I also want peace of mind — to literally empty my head of non-stop chatter. I live on a quay in the heart of a European city. While I enjoy the intellectual and cultural aspects of living in a city, I also want to spend more time in nature because that brings stillness to my mind.

3. How would you spend your time?

If you could spend your days doing anything, how you would spend your time? Would you go kayaking every day? Or perhaps go for long, easy bike rides? Or would you spend your time in a kitchen cooking up dinners to serve your guests because you love cooking and entertaining?

Me, I like the idea of living a relaxed, easy and carefree life. I want to go to the beach or to the park when I feel like it. To have long coffee and tea breaks. And to enjoy good food. I want to travel around the world and meet new people and have new experiences. And when I come to the end of my life, I want to remember it all. This is why I photograph the small moments — to help me remember.

Why the questions?

When I began asking myself the questions I’ve just asked you, I saw that my time was spent rushing from one project to another or stressing about things outside my control. I felt like my life was not peaceful the way I wanted it to be.

It was through photographing how I wanted my life to look and feel that I began to see how I could make changes…and eventually my reality started to look how I wanted it to be. I used photographing my daily life as a way to create those changes.

Ready to unplug from stress?

Mindfulness is at the core of all Brit Hammer’s courses.

“Celebrate Your Life in Beautiful Images Part 1” gets you started photographing how you want your life to look and what you want more of in your life. Part 2 takes you further by focusing on capturing the essence of your loved ones — think about the little things that you’ll always remember, such as how they hold their favorite coffee mug in their hands!

“I just wanted to thank you for another wonderful class. I have to confess that each week when I read the new assignment, my first reaction was mild panic and a deep certainty that I would not be able to produce anything worthwhile that fit within the parameters you had set. But before I knew it, the ideas started to flow, and I quickly became obsessed (no, that isn’t too strong a word!) with exploring the possibilities. I can honestly say that the photos I produced in response to your assignments are among my favorites. Thanks for bringing out a creative side I didn’t know I had!”

Understanding Color

“Thank you so very much for this course! It’s allowed me to take the blinders off and present my images for what I want them to be without being a slave to the “reality” of the camera. I would also add that in conjunction with your printing course, this has been the most useful course I’ve ever taken. Your notes are more than comprehensive and your comments and critiques are direct, clear, and always directed to the improvement of the art.”

” I want to thank you for this class and for your patience and availability to answer all of my questions. I have learned very much through this class. I have used LR in the past, but mostly for editing images. I now have a better grasp in the organization of my images, an even better understanding of editing images, and an understanding of the value of presets. I still have a lot to learn, but this has put me on the road to be able to improve my photography. Again, thank you! ”
